Jose Reyes has really turned it the past month. He has a triple slash of .336/.382/.560 with 24 runs scored, 6 home runs, and 8 steals since the All-Star break. Look for him to finish the season strong.

Starlin Castro went through a 46 game stretch between June 12-August 5 where he didn’t steal a single base. Since August 5th he has stolen 3 bags, so I have enough confidence that he’ll be strong down the stretch. Keep in mind, he just signed a nice contract extension worth 70 million earlier today.

I think one of the most pleasant surprises at Shortstop this year has been Alcides Escobar. He stole 23 bases last year and already has 24 this year. The nice thing though is the increase in average as he’s sitting at a very pretty .309 for the year. I like him down the stretch.

The Shortstop position gets somewhat jumbled near the bottom of my rankings. From spot 13 through 20, they all have their weaknesses, but can certainly contribute in a meaningful way. For instance, J.J. Hardy will provide nice pop, but is an average killer. Jhonny Peralta won’t kill your average, but he won’t hit for a lot of power. Hopefully if you’re using any of these guys in a 10 or 12 team mixed league, it’s as a backup. The shortstop position is quite weak.

If you need speed in September, think about stashing Dee Gordon at some point. If he could only get on base…

Finally, one Shortstop not included on this list is Troy Tulowitzki. I am no doctor, but let’s face it, “Tulo” is an injury prone player than just can’t stay healthy. I do not see him returning this year. IF by chance he does, I’d put him in the 15 range.
